"If I stand back from a piece and I feel a certain emotional tug, almost like looking at your lover, I am satisfied and know that the piece is successful."

This is how I work as an artist. As a designer, I must get into your head and design to find that emotional tug within you

Artists Statement:

I consider myself a designer first and a craftsman second and sometimes an artist.

When designing a piece I always start with the shape. The form has to stand alone and make a statement without the influences of materials or colors. I prefer to work with curves often mimicking the natural curves found in nature or in the human form. I often try to depict movement or action in many of my pieces. I also like to work with repetition and how the eye and brain responds to positive and negative spaces.

Once the form is set, I choose the materials and colors. The materials must complement and accentuate the form. I enjoy woods with bold grain and I firmly believe that the use of alternative materials such as metal, glass, and plastics can add to a piece. I love bright, bold colors on the whole piece or to accent a small detail.

Resume:
I entered college as a architecture major; I graduated with a finance degree. I spent my early working years in corporate jobs first as a stock broker, then managing retail lumber yards, and then finally as a buyer for a warehouse club. During my corporate days, I spent most nights and weekends renovating houses for fun and profit.
I have spent the last fifteen years as a remodeling contractor. The projects have ranged in scope from complete houses to minor repairs. The bulk of my work has been building additions or doing kitchen and bathroom remodels. My design, problem solving skills, and my ability to work with challenging customers has kept me fully employed.
In September 2006, I entered the nine month comprehensive program at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. The CFC experience forced me to shift my thinking from being a production oriented trades person to a design, art oriented craftsperson; in effect, an artist.

My shop is located in York, Maine. Visitors are welcome Tuesday through Saturday from 9AM to 5PM. Call to make an appointment.
